The problem for me with the One Year Later books has been a matter of economics rather than quality. Following the OYL jump, I took the opportunity to try out most of the mainstream DC books, and, in terms of quality, almost all of them took a tremendous leap forward. However, I could not sustain this level of financial commitment to that many series, despite the fact that I would like to continue reading most of them. Also, with some interesting new series starting and the relaunch of series I was previously buying, like Justice League and Justice Society, my comic purchasing now looks very much like it did prior to OYL. I wonder, looking at the numbers from the November sales list, if a similar phenomenon is happening with other readers, who are able to find temporary room in their comics budgets for these big events, but quickly return to their status quo. So, while I would say that I found the OYL event to be a creative success, it's temporary financial success may have been inevitable.

I wonder, too, if the success of 52 will be sustainable in another weekly series. Personally, I'm looking forward to the end of the series, not only for the plot developments, but also for the opportunity to free up $10 in my monthly comic budget.

On a tangential note, I also think that DC tried to launch too many new series and miniseries in the past year--many of which are very good. However, these series may be cannibalizing each other's sales. For example, would Brave New World have been more successful if there had been only 3 series launched?

We catch up with the characters, unsure of where they've been, with just enough questions about their lost time to keep a sense of wonder. Same goes for Green Lantern, actually.

I suppose that my point is that the OYL shifts didn't have to be incredibly cosmic in scope for me to appreciate them. Nor did I expect every single hero to show up with battle scars from whatever conflict was brought about from 52. How could they? To keep the very solid sense of unfolding mystery going in 52 itself, no creative team could afford to have their hero reminisce in definite terms about the events gone by

Admittedly, this isn't very realistic, as humans will always be wont to share memories, particularly traumatic ones. It is part of our healing process. But we have to remember that these books have always asked us to suspend our disbelief, and for more than just accepting that a man can fly.

Firstly, I am thrilled with the direction this discussion is going. I think the worst fear of any reviewer is receiving comments like "first post!" and "the DCU is dumb and you're stoopid for reading DC".
