That’s All (A Mistake), Folks!
It’s been entirely too long since I had a rant about something, so here’s your overdue raving:
I try not to be too critical of small slip-ups in life. Comics are held to a higher standard. In the comic books themselves, they only have 22 pages, so for a professional product that is published on a frequent basis, I’m going to cry foul when people don’t dot the i’s and cross the t’s. But I was reading the latest TV Guide today, and found out about a faux pas that really should not have happened.
It’s Donald Duck’s 75th anniversary. In what was supposed to be a happy little fluff piece, Katie Couric ended the segment with her usual smile, but said “What else can I say but, ‘That’s all, folks!’”
Let that sink in for a moment. It was Donald Duck. Who never said, “That’s all, folks!” That line, that almost every human being on the planet who ever watched television knows, came from Porky Pig. Porky Pig was not a Disney property. Porky Pig is Warner Brothers property. The two were big competitors back in the day. Sigh.
The problem for Couric is that no matter what happens next, she can’t put a good light on it. Was this an ad lib? She looks stupid. Was this just reading the teleprompter? Congratulations, she still looks stupid, and now so does her segment producer, the video editor, any fact-checkers that might be left after a decade of down-sizing and cutting costs… The CBS Evening News is a multi-million dollar production, with who knows how many professionals. Couric herself earns around $15 million a year. Did she not watch the same cartoons the rest of us did growing up? Is she like that Will Ferrell character in the Anchorman movie, and you can put anything on the teleprompter, and she will say it, no matter how nonsensical? Disney and Warner Brothers are big-time companies, the types that spend millions of dollars in advertising, and she just managed to insult them both at the same time.
We can’t make too much out of this, naturally. It was an obvious slip-up, but not about a topic that your average person would consider to be of any importance. For the pop culture junkies like us, though, this is an example of one of the problems involving things like cartoons and comics: they just get no respect. So what if you just committed the pop culture equivalent of giving a pork rib to a Muslim, only the geeks care, right? Sure, except all of the old media get their multi-million dollar deals and pretend they are the only ones who deserve legitimacy, while us geeks actually use new technology, get the stories out, and actually get the facts straight.
CBS will most likely not even acknowledge the error, or if they do, they will try to make a joke out of it. This condescension is part of their operative norm, even as they are scared of the so-called “new media.” They just can’t seem to understand that the new media is not just the latest gee-whiz fad, but rather intelligent people utilizing the best in modern technological resources to perform the same function, with a slightly different focus or twist on occasion. If I get a fact wrong in one of my columns, someone can immediately post a correction. When I see that, I either modify my post to correct the error, or respond in the postings to acknowledge my mistake and accept any drubbing. It’s that kind of simple humanity that makes this whole new media thing attractive, and the old media’s failure to understand some of these things is exactly why they’re running scared, but still don’t know exactly why they’re so scared.
So CBS spent a ton of money to gain Katie Couric, and immediately watched their ratings drop. The recent ratings announcements show the show is at its lowest ratings since people started tracking those sorts of things. I only know this happened because I read about it in a (surprise!) pop culture magazine, because I never watch CBS Evening News. And this mistake reinforces my wise decision. A ton of people might look at this Donald Duck/Porky Pig slip and think it’s all crazy talk, and there is no way this can possibly be important to anyone. Myself, I was halfway thinking that when I first read about it, and it would be so easy to agree and move on to the next article. But since I started blogging a year ago, every pop culture report I have seen on TV has been wrong, and I have catalogued a number of the major news associations and their snafus in the past (such as the coverage of the death of Bruce Wayne, the death of Captain America, and someone trying to claim Stan Lee invented the first gay super-hero, just to list a few), as they have touched on the comics world.
The people who grew up on this pop culture are now in charge in comics, in Hollywood, in publishing, and in advertising. We know this material. Avid fans eat, breathe, and live this stuff. And we do not appreciate the snobby media elite looking down their noses at us, while trying to get viewers by covering our material, and getting it precisely wrong while they sit there smugly.
So while this is not anything to get you angry, it is something you should be aware of. The younger generation, the ones who are replacing the old TV-only generation, we’re not the dumb slacker nerds who live with their parents and can’t compete (okay, a few hundred of us are, granted). Most of us are hard-working people who go to their day jobs, and still have a passion to follow our pop culture and participate in it via blogging and other modern social media, and we get our facts right more often than the TV personalities do. If you can’t get something like a tagline correctly when any six-year-old could, what facts are you getting wrong in your coverage of important events? We’re not pampered millionaires who have an entire crew of special effects gurus go to work on our make-up to make us look pretty, while we smile and practice a fourth-grade reading level off of a teleprompter, and our greatest worry is not to mess up speaking the words.
We’re smarter than you.
We study our subjects in depth more than you.
We are more often actually correct than you.
We have stopped watching you, and we are talking to each other.
And you are right to be afraid.
That’s all, folks.
