Tpull's Weekly Marvel Comics Review – Part Two
All-New Savage She-Hulk 3
by Fred Van Lente, Peter Vale, and Robert Atkins
The Dark Avengers are on the scene, and Noh-Varr isolates Lyra, confident he can easily handle her. Instead, we are treated to a flashback showing instruction given to Lyra along the lines of gamma rays as the matrix. As a consequence, Lyra hands our wanna-be Captain Marvel his head. Just as easily, Daken-as-Wolverine makes her think of Nella, the X-23 look-alike, and disrupts her concentration. It’s all part of the master plan, because it puts Lyra right where she needs to be to complete her mission and mate with Osborn. All together now: Ewww!
The backup story is by Paul Tobin and Benton Jew, and it has a couple of funny zingers, which you might expect at this point if you’re familiar with Tobin’s work. It’s a quick story that shows the first time Lyra started to question her cause and her battles, and it’s just about as good as the main feature.
Cable 15
by Duane Swierczynski and Ariel Olivetti
The story falls apart as Deadpool reveals he has been in Stryfe’s employ the entire time. He goes from helping them, to planning to betray them, to betraying Stryfe, all at no rhyme of reason, and it throws off any momentum the story might have had. The Vanisher still looks like a teenage punker, as opposed to the slightly-older person he should be. Adding to the inconsistency, Archangel has gone from brooding over apocalypse, to thinking about killing him… and now he’s helping him?!? Does the writer even know which direction he wants to go? All of these characters change their minds faster than I change lanes on the freeway!
Deadpool shoots Stryfe, but Stryfe comes back and rips him in two. I’m trying to figure out why anyone would care about any of this any more. Ah well, it all ends in next issue of X-Force. Maybe somebody can do some damage control after that.
Dark Reign: Fantastic Four 4
by Jonathan Hickman and Sean Chen
Franklin and Valeria stall Osborn while Reed suffers overload from too much alternate reality viewing. Think super-hero YouTube gone wrong. Valeria uses her brains, and gets to avoid having Venom eat her brains, while Franklin shows up in a Spider-Man mask, ideal for making Osborn lose it. Sean Chen’s artwork is suffering, with the backgrounds being very simple, and the way he does faces is not to my liking. It’s like he has streamlined his style to do faces fast, but the similarity is killing me. Chaykin does this a lot, and in my opinion, they lose something of the individuality of each character.
Reed has come to the conclusion that every reality has problems whenever there is a group action. Only in cases where Reed seems to act alone do things turn out right. Talk about a confirmation of the old adage, “If you want something done right…” Will Reed take this into the Marvel Universe proper and start lone action to fix the world? And what does this mean for his math that showed the prime number for maximizing performance was four (remember McDuffie’s storyline on the previous creative team for the regular series)? Next issue wraps things up.
Dark Reign: Hawkeye 3
by Andy Diggle and Tom Raney
Bullseye is going crazy, seeing himself in his old uniform while he is still dressed as Hawkeye. An anonymous source gives Ben Urich an entire file on an NSA black ops outfit, which is cliché and stretching things a little bit, but this is make-believe land, so why not create your one-millionth rogue government black ops group, right? No sense coming up with an original idea anymore…
The final page gives us a couple dozen Bullseyes, all armed with the same weapon, pointed right at the main man. I’m not sure where they’re going with this one, but it feels drawn out. This will probably be one of those series that can’t receive a recommendation or a warning until it’s finished. If you can, at least wait for the trade. It doesn’t read well in a monthly setting by this point, they didn’t do enough to set the stage properly by the end of issue 3.
Fantastic Force 3

I’m starting to think Marvel doesn’t know how to put a mini-series together anymore. The scatterbrained plot runs off the rails as the manifestation of the Earth itself time-warps Phoenix, Polaris, and Scarlet Witch to this alternate planet to bring thousands back, because the existence of the humans is tied to Gaea. It’s taken them three issues just to get to this point, but it was all jerky like a hand-held camera, the way they steered us to this point.
The panel compositions are awkward enough that it takes me a second to realize there’s a printing error on the third-to-last page, so I have no idea what the text box says. The art is cool enough, and Ego looks good as he makes an appearance on the last page, but the execution was so slow and awkward, I’m not sure they can save anything with next issue. How big of a shock can Ego’s appearance be anyway, since they put him on the cover?!? Wierd. I don’t get this series at all.
War of Kings: Ascension 3
by Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning, and Wellington Alves
Oh thank heaven, a good comic! The old team of DnA is still hitting it out of the ballpark with their War of Kings event. Chris meets up with a Skrull inside Talon’s gem, and we find out that Chris’ body is still inside the gem for razor, but his mind managed to roam over to the Skrull. Blastaar gets his hands on the control rod and tries to take out the two raptors, but they put magical wards on the control rod that enable them to take it back whenever they want. This puts Blastaar at their beck and call, and Razor gets to go to the Shi’ar Throneworld.
Chris pops out and finally regains control of Darkhawk just after Razor has landed on the Throneworld and zapped Lilandra, as seen in War of Kings 4. He’s got Gladiator, Havok, and just about everyone else out for his blood. Such a lucky kid…
DnA have had great luck in assembling a cadre of artists to help them with their cosmic sagas, and Wellington Alves continues his streak here, with some good coloring by GURU eFX. Alves puts in a ton of little details that the inkers bring out, making for captivating, colorful pictures in every frame. The continuity and consistency of this event help to make it better executed than most other mini-series or event comics out there.
Tpull is Travis Pullen. He started reading comics at 5 years old, and he can't seem to stop.
