Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps 2

I love mini-series like these for a couple of reasons. One reason is they are paced to come out quickly, so no waiting an entire month for the next part. Two, interlocking covers, which will showcase one member of each of the Corps fighting each other when the third issue is out. Finally, the creative teams are great for each portion. This is not like at Marvel, where they put out an anthology with some average talent. This is a highly cohesive story, brought together by creative teams at the top of their collective game.

The Red Lantern Tale is by Geoff Johns and Eddy Barrows. Barrows puts excellent effort into giving us a beautiful alien, and yet has no problem giving us the same woman showing fear, then rage. We learn the origin of Bleez, and even though the name is not the greatest, the story is. The understanding of her history, and the choices that life forced upon her, helps us to understand why she became a candidate for the Red. And as great stories tend to do, his one might make you say, “But for the grace of God go I…”

Gene Ha lends his talents to Carol Ferris in the next tale, with flashbacks tinted in purple. Johns gets the writing perfect, as witness Carol’s reaction to seeing a purple ring pop up again: “Oh, come on. Not again.” The ring can see the truth of her love, and it uses her concern for Hal to make her commit to the purple yet again.

Peter Tomasi writes the last tale, drawn by Tom Mandrake. Mandrake does great to present us with a hungering monster, who calls for the most precious items on each world. If the people do not surrender their valuables to his gaping maw, he destroys the entire planet. He’s like Galactus, but bribable, so you can make him go away. Whatever power he ad, it’s nothing compared to Larfleeze’s orange glow, so Blume becomes part of the orange glow.

There’s also a good two-page explanation by Ethan Van Sciver in the back, detailing the history of how the different symbols for all the Corps were created, and it’s a good read too. This is already in my top ten for mini-series for this year.

Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds 5

It’s here at last! There are a ton of characters juggled in this story, and the creative team manages to give each of them just enough screen time, whether it’s Bart and Conner, Sodam Yot, or the Legionnaires themselves. Superboy is still a whiner, even in his Time Trapper personage, and the story weaves an explanation involving multiple potential futures. The Time Trapper will probably be back at some point, but will he be Superboy? A future Cosmic Boy? Or someone entirely new? It seems as if the universe’s nature calls for someone to take on that role in some form eventually.

Perez is at his best, able to cram tons of characters into a single panel. His two-page spread of multiversal Legionnaires deserves to be studied for his attempt to give everyone a distinguishable face, as opposed to a ton of artists who draw just a couple of faces quickly from their “stable.”

The story beats are great, as Johns has changes occur/revealed for many characters. The Wildfire/Dawnstar relationship sees a good breakthrough; Sun Boy and Polar Boy become a team supreme; The White Witch undergoes a dramatic transformation, to the despair of Blok; and all of the Brainiacs are portrayed well.

The ending can be confusing, because Earth Prime is back somehow, and the inhabitants have somehow learned to understand that the comic books tell what happens in parallel dimensions. Also, Earth-247 is gone completely, which has a tendency to confuse people who thought there were only 52 Earths now. We will probably have to wait for someone official to explain everything in a comic story, but it seems as if the Time Trapper had access to every variation at the end of time, meaning not just the current 52 Earths, but all of the previous incarnations involved with the multiverse. So while the current multiversal configuration gives us 52, that is not the be-all end-all of the state of affairs forever. Throw in the concept of Hypertime, and you’ve got a confusing mess again, but suffice it to say, this allows DC to ping-pong back and forth to pre-Crisis, and post-Crisis, pre-52 and post-52, whenever they really feel like it. At this point, there really does need to be some good continuity time-travel story to better explain things. My own hypothesis is that Earth-Prime is not part of the 52 current universes. However, Didio did say that “there are 52 earths, and then alternate dimensions within each universe, as well as alternate timelines and microverses within each.” Which probably doesn’t help matters any, and makes the DC multiverse issue a bigger basket case than any other comic universe.

Johns also set up several interesting points for exploration in the Legion. Some of the most interesting things are the conversion of Mysa to her Black Witch persona, the return of Lournu as Duplicate Damsel (who is now like DC’s version of Multiple Man), and a potential successor to Karate Kid. Look for more on these things starting in Adventure Comics #1.

As much as I would have preferred to have this issue out earlier, every fan has someone with whom they will wait. For artists, George Perez is my personal exception, and even as irritated as I am that this came out so far behind schedule, I am still impressed by its quality, and my ability to enjoy it. Green Lantern 44

by Geoff Johns and Doug Mahnke

Doug Mahnke draws a mean Martian Manhunter corpse! Just as great as the art (and Mahnke’s willingness to draw a vantage point from under the Flash’s nose, something people like Gil Kane did, but others hated to even try), the narrative gems that Geoff Johns inserts are priceless. Barry’s teasing over secret identities and Hal’s subsequent joking about how Clark landed Lois is humorous and seldom-mentioned. The relation of Flash and J’onn in their civilian police jobs is also nice to see get a mention.

Johns makes sure to give us a quick look into the six different color Corps fighting each other, allowing us to fit the meta-story into place in a snapshot in time, right amidst the explanation of Scar’s motivation: living beings are the source of the chaos, so if the universe has no living beings, there will be order. It’s not the first time we have seen this excuse, but it does sound valid, coming from Scar. Once the power levels hit 100%, does that mean the Anti-Monitor will be back?

The final scene is just plain cool, as a horde of black rings come hurtling out towards a dead planet with plenty of prospects to wield a ring. Poor John Stewart! Excellent art, good action, nice character interaction, this is one comic firing on all cylinders.

Outsiders 20

by Peter Tomasi and Lee Garbett

There’s a lot of talk by the team until Owlman (the brains of the outfit) figures out that some numbers scrawled in blood are coordinates. Gee, did you really need a genius to explore that possibility? I mean, it’s a toss-up whether you try to figure out if it’s a date or a phone number first, maybe a social security number or an IP address, but coordinates have to be one of the first things that pop into anyone’s mind. Lame.

The Creeper finally starts acting like his regular, unusual self, so that’s one good thing. Garbett’s art is good enough to move the story along with what we’ve been given, and I really like his rendition of Creeper. The labeling of the enemy group as the Insiders is possibly the lamest thing I have seen in recent comic history. Really? The reason the Outsiders were formed was to defeat the Insiders? It sounds like a competition between belly-buttons!

Despite throwing in Al Ghul and Vandal Savage, Tomasi can’t resist ending things with a cliché explosion, ruining the enemy headquarters. Black Lightning tries (for a second!) to complain about the loss of life, but who died? More to the point, with such a massive explosion, why is it that nobody appears to have died at al?!?

Boring. Move along, nothing to see here. And why, oh why, do they bother to emblazon “Batman: Reborn” across the top? There’s no Batman! No Bruce, no Dick, no nothing. Pure nonsense. They need to cancel this title quickly and let it sit for a few more years.

Supergirl 43

by Sterling Gates and Jamal Igle

Now this is a cool story. It’s reminiscent of Wally West’s letter to his parents in a classic New Teen Titans story (#20, 1980). Kara writes a letter to her departed father on her birthday, a day when she has to choose a guild to join. Jamal Igle’s art complements the letter narrative feel perfectly, adding context to her words without showing them up.

Astute readers will figure out what Kara’s mother has been doing before Kara does herself in the story. The “punishments” thrown Kara’s way have given her more exposure to the guilds, so as to help her make a better choice. It’s a clever idea, and it’s great to see a writer being given the leeway to explore something like this. The pace is excellent for one issue, making for a great beginning, middle and end.

Is Kara’s choice at the end one of a child yearning to better understand a parent? Or an attempt to keep friends close, and enemies closer? It will be great to see this point explored more at a later date, depending on how things work out between Kara and her mother. For a title always on the verge of being canceled from my personal pull list, the arrival of Gates and Igle has turned things around completely, and this may have been their best issue yet.

For those of you who could never relate to Supergirl, now might be the best time to give this a try.

Tpull is Travis Pullen. He started reading comics at 5 years old, and he can't seem to stop.

Despite the cartoony look, Supergirl has been an excellent ride lately, hasn't it?
