Original Star Wars Trilogy Coming to DVD

Original Star Wars Trilogy Lucasfilm is making old-school "Star Wars" fans very happy. On Sept. 12, the original, unaltered "Star Wars" films will finally be released on DVD.

By unaltered I mean the "oh my God, this is the version I saw in the theater" films. No sniveling wamprats scittering in the background. No Greedo shooting first. Just pure, minimal-CGI goodness.

In a press release, Lucasfilm says the new (well, old) DVDs will come in two-disc sets: disc 1 will contain the original film ("Star Wars," "Empire," "Jedi") and disc 2 will feature the 2004 digitally remastered version of the same flick. Each two-disc set will be sold separately. Pricing has not been announced.

The "Original Unaltered Trilogy" (not the most elegant title, but it'll do), will only be available Sept. 12 to December 31, 2006.

Totally random sidenote: Now that many of us old-schoolers have popped out little ones, I'd be interested to know how parents are going to handle the all-important "Star Wars" introduction. Will you follow the final story arc ("Episode I" through "Episode VI")? Will you show the 2004 originals ("Star Wars" through "Jedi") then show the prequels? Or, will you revisit your own youthful "Star Wars" experience: "Original Unaltered Trilogy" followed by the prequels? These are the questions that haunt me. -- Mac Slocum

Got mixed feelings about this.

I love SW but cant wash away the "milk the cow all that you can" sense all over these DVD´s

In the word of a Master Jedi...

"I have a bad feeling about this"

It definitely smacks of "marketing opportunity."

Nonetheless, I'd love to have these versions -- Georgie already has a lot of my money, what's a little more?

"Marketing", "schmarketing"... this is the shit that die-hard fans (or "dorks" as normal people call us) have been waiting for. No more eBay-ing for second-rate DVD transfers of the original flix from LaserDisc. No more lamenting the fact that the reduxed versions - not the originals - got the shiny glossy treatment with supurb picture and modern surround sound. No more grovelling at the feet of Emperor Lucas for his table scraps... that is, until he decides to start releasing these pictures all over again on hi-def DVD. Then, we'll be back to the petition signing.

What's interesting is as children (at least in my experience) the interst in SW crossed all lines and barriers. All the kids in my classes liked it, no matter if they were jocks, brains, dorks or whatever. It's odd to hear people say fans are dorks now... I guess I think of it through the eyes of my childhood- everyone liked it. (Maybe that's it; because virtually everyone liked it.)
