Think Secret, in their typical rumor-mongering fashion, reports that Steve Jobs may announce a new movie-download-rental service via iTunes at their August 7th Worldwide Developers conference:
"Apple is said to have ironed out agreements with Walt Disney, Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and Warner Bros., and is currently in talks with other major movie studios as well. It's unknown to what extent content will be available come the August 7 announcement, or whether Apple will announce all of its studio deals at that time."
With online rivals Movielink and CinemaNow having announced this week their own download-to-burn services, it remains to be seen how successful Apple will be, providing the back-fence talk is true. There is no doubt about the iPod's dominance in the marketplace (Think Secret believes they will announce the "true" iPod video at the same conference), and we are not privy to the behind-closed-doors deals Jobs is making with the movie industry, but if this is the first step in the Mac mini's emergence as the be-all-end-all media center machine for the living room with the iPod as portable sibling, competitors may start bailing water again by filing as many patent lawsuits as possible.
