Due to Shortage, Next-Gen DVD War may be Delayed

Looks like we'll get to wallow in our lo-res mediocrity for a while - a shortage of blue laser diodes could set back the next-gen DVD war to some time in the first quarter of 2007.

Unnamed sources gave DigiTimes.com the scoop, basically stating that yield rates were not as high as expected for certain manufacturers (Nichia reported a yield rate of 30%!).

Sony has even moved to stop shipments of diodes to its customers. You can imagine how much Sony execs are sweating at the moment, given that they recently announced that production of the PS3 had not even started. Now add a diode shortage to the mix (the PS3 will include a built-in Blu-ray player), and you've got an imminent computer game geek uprising at your fingertips the likes of which has not been seen since...well, ok, since last November when the XBOX360 limped into stores.

We just have to wonder if NME execs are wearing Cheshire grins at the moment, rolling up their sleeves in preparation for a global HD VMD launch next month.
