If you've never tried the laziness-inducing-but-freaking-awesome Netflix service, now may be the time. The online-only DVD rental company announced that its lowest-tier pricing plan of $5.99 has been sliced by a dollar to a mere $4.99! What does this dirt cheap option get you, you ask? Why, 2 DVD rentals per month, but you can only have one DVD out of your queue at a time. So what's stopping you from starting your free trial before the monthly fee kicks in?
Blockbuster's Total Access lowest-tier service may give you pause. When they heard of Netflix's price cut, Blockbuster pooh-poohed the reduction, stating that they had no plans to reduce their own $5.99 service. Why? Because even though BB's Total Access offer is a dollar more, it allows 5 DVD rentals per month, 2 out at a time, with the option to return your DVD to a physical store for a freebie rental as well as a coupon for one free movie or game rental!
"We think Blockbuster Total Access is a better offer and that value conscious consumers understand that,†stated a Total Access spokesperson. Let the smack-talk begin!
We like the way things are heating up between these two companies. When two heavyweights go at it in any industry, consumers win as more and more features and specials get added to win customer loyalty.
We have to wonder though - who is going to be the first to breach the digital divide when DVD's die?
