Next-Gen DVD Sales a Big "Meh"

If you're still maniacally riding the next-gen DVD fence like we are, then recent sales figures released by a Sony report will do nothing to cause you to leap to one side or other. You may, in fact, jump to another fence all together - namely the one between DVD services such as Netflix and the digital download realm (hello, Apple TV).

In the Sony report, which reveals sales figures via Nielsen VideoScan, we're finally getting a peak into actual numbers sold for Blu-ray and HD-DVD. As of March 18th, Blu-ray has sold 844,000 units since inception, while HD-DVD has sold 708,600. While Sony is of course using the research results to argue that clearly Blu-ray is the format of the future, the actual break-down of the numbers unveils a different issue - one of widespread indecisiveness. Let's take a look at the Nielsen figures for Top Ten Titles Since Inception, and Top Ten Titles for Week Ending 3/18/07:

The top-selling next-gen DVD since inception is only at 40k units? And don't get us started on that one week tally ending March 18th. Sony's bragging like the war is over, but perhaps Cory Doctorow over at Boing Boing said it best:

"Blu-Ray and HD-DVD -- the two new high-def video formats that have been crippled into uselessness through ridiculous anti-copying measures -- are selling so poorly that a new disc can get on the weekly top ten by selling as few as 880 copies."

Ouch! You know, the grass is looking awfully green on the other side of the fence....
