DVD Review: "Grey's Anatomy: The Complete Third Season - Seriously Extended"

All you "Grey's Anatomy" fans out there will be happy to know the DVD set Grey's Anatomy: The Complete Third Season - Seriously Extended Edition was released today! And there was much rejoicing. Or something.

The seven disc set includes the 25 one-hour episodes, as well as several bonus features such as four extended episodes exclusive to the DVD, three featurettes, deleted scenes, outtakes and audio commentary.

I'm not going to go through and break down the entire season for you. That's what Grey's Anatomy Fodder is for. So, let's talk about this DVD set.

In addition to the Bonus Features on the last disk, four of the 25 regular episodes are dubbed "extended." Since neither the booklet nor the back of the DVD case gives you any clue as to which episodes include the extra scenes, you have to go through the menus of each disk to find them. So you're in the "know," the episodes with extended scenes are "Time Has Come Today," "Where the Boys Are," "Great Expectations," and "Wishin' and Hopin'."

Now, on to the Bonus disk. The first extra you'll hit in the "Bonus Features" section is "Making the Rounds with Patrick Dempsey." Clever title aside, it's not about Dempsey's rounds as McDreamy at Seattle Grace. No. It's about his off-camera hobby of driving race cars. This featurette is about a couple of days spent with him at the track - and, of course, snippets of rabid fans who love to ogle him. If you're a big Dempsey fan, you may enjoy it. Otherwise, it provides no real "inside" info into the series.

A better featurette is the one on Pompeo and her character called "Shades of Grey: One on One with Ellen Pompeo." While it is a bit of a gratuitous "Why We Love Ellen" session, it provides some cute behind-the-scenes bits.

The featurette "Prescription for Success: Jane Doe Unmasked" is the best of the bunch and provides a behind the scenes look at the making of the Jane Doe character. It shows the various stages of makeup and prosthetics and the strength of actress Elizabeth Reaser's talent in communicating emotion.

Probably my favorite part of any DVD's "extras" are the deleted scenes. This set doesn't disappoint, supplying us with a nice little collection of supplemental plot points. While it's pretty clear why many of these were deleted, I replayed the hilarious scene of Christina trying on her wedding dress from "The Other Side of Life, Part 1" over and over. Why was that deleted?!?!

Snippets from the cast's favorite episodes are also included, among them is my favorite - McSteamy coming out of the bathroom in that towel.

Then there's the cute four minute feature with outtakes from this season. Who doesn't love outtakes? These are funny. Not hilarious, but you'll get a chuckle out of them.

Finally, there are a few episodes with audio commentary. Personally, I hate audio commentary unless we're talking MST3K or anything by Joss Whedon. I rarely see the point of rewatching a TV show or a movie just to hear actors/directors/producers talk about it. But, if you like that kind of thing, then you'll probably like these.

Overall, this is a good set and will make a nice addition to your collection. Plus, you get that McSteamy towel scene to replay as often as you like. What could be better? Seriously. (I had to say it.)
