Gary Oldman Lured to "The Backwoods"

There doesn't seem to be a lot of information out yet about the forthcoming horror flick "The Backwoods" ("El Bosque de las sombras" is the Spanish title), which stars Gary Oldman, but judging by the stills that have been released, there's more than a little promise. It's directed by Koldo Serra, whose previous credits are few. But the premise sounds interesting enough to work.

Fangoria describes the storyline in very straightforward terms. Apparently Lucy and Norman are having trouble in their relationship, so they decide to spend some time with a friend in his remote Spanish home. Their soothing getaway takes a dark turn when they discover a girl with deformed hands locked up in a nearby cabin, and to make matters worse, the locals don't want to see the girl freed. (It's unclear if the film will carry any of the philosphical weight of the classic Ursula K. LeGuin story "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas.")

And there you have it. It shouldn't take much more than that to end up with an entertaining fright picture. After all, Hitchcock was able to set an entire suspense film in a small boat, and it worked incredibly well. According to the IMDb, filming on "The Backwoods" began last month. If all goes according to plans, it will be released sometime in 2006.--Pete Mesling
