Though "Night Watch," the first of a trilogy of Russian films based on the novels of Sergei Lukyanenko, was released in the summer of 2004, it has yet to make waves on North American shores. However, the film's official U.S. site bears quotations from Quentin Tarantino and Danny Boyle that are both worth repeating here in their entirety:
"Just after we've lived through 'Lord of the Rings' and we can't even imagine another movie spellbinding us, along comes Timur Bekmambetov's fantasy masterpiece. Like Ridley Scott, Timur is an astonishing visionary and 'Night Watch' is an epic of extraordinary power."--Quentin Tarantino
"'Lord of the Rings' and 'The Matrix' have a true successor ... 'Night Watch' is on its way and the bar has been truly raised ... Extraordinary filmmaking."--Danny Boyle
I realize that even the greatest artists can have lapses in judgment, but those are some pretty strong opinions. I think its safe to say that "Night Watch" will be finding a North American audience in fairly short order. The U.S. site for the film proclaims that "Night Watch" is coming soon. The U.K. site has it arriving in theaters there on October 7. It looks to be just a matter of time.--Pete Mesling
