Top Ten Scariest Films Revealed

The Guardian Unlimited has posted Giant magazine's list of the 10 scariest films ever made, and it looks something like this:

1. "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" [the original]

2. "The Silence of the Lambs"

3. "The Exorcist"

4. "Night of the Living Dead"

5. "Audition"

6. "Hellraiser"

7. "The Fly"

8. "Suspiria"

9. "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer"

10. "Evil Dead"

Not a bad list, overall. It would be interesting to know what the elimination process entailed. Pretty tough to narrow it down to 10. If they'd be calling it the top 10 from 1968 to 1999, the list would have more credibility, but there are an awful lot of terrifying films from the first part of the twentieth century that didn't make the cut.

The biggest surprises about the list have to be that there's not a "Psycho," a "Rosemary's Baby," an "Omen" or a "Shining" in sight. Harrumph.--Pete Mesling

If they are going to pick "Silence of the Lambs," then "Alien" and "Jaws" both deserve slots on that list. I guess you could go on and on...

I also second "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Shining." I didn't think "Psycho" was that scary, but it is an excellent film.
