It appears that the Mick Garris-directed miniseries based on Stephen King's "Desperation" is finally approaching an air date (next fall on ABC). The Horror Channel doesn't report anything too specific except that there's already a promotional DVD floating around out there with some "Desperation" footage on it. The bad news? You have to shake hands with the devil twice in order to obtain a copy: first by purchasing "Desperate Housewives: Season 1," second by doing so at a Wal-Mart. Supposedly the combination will earn you a copy of the promotional DVD. Unfortunately, it will also earn you permanent moorage on the Lake of Fire.
If all of that sounds too damn complicated and risky, just relax. When "Desperation" finally hits the small screen, there's a good chance it will be an improvement over the book. All the miniseries has to do is capture the dread of the novel's first hundred-or-so pages and avoid the entropy of later chapters. There's a lot of terrifying stuff to play with, and it wouldn't be the first time a good film was made from a less-than-stellar book.--Pete Mesling
