Okay, if this is David Cronenberg's idea of eschewing the horror genre, I guess I can live with it. Digital Spy has news that Cronenberg will be taking the reins of a thriller for BBC Films and Focus Features entitled "Eastern Promises." It's to be written by Steve "Dirty Pretty Things" Knight and will involve a midwife who gets caught up in events stemming from a prostitute giving birth on Christmas Eve. Shooting should begin in the fall.
This isn't the only reassurance we have that Cronenberg hasn't severed his pact with the forces of darkness entirely. The IMDb's entries for his two most imminent films, "London Fields" and "I Kill," don't exactly leave one with the impression that the man behind such disturbing classics as "Naked Lunch" and "The Brood" is going completely soft. And If he's moving in more of a "Dead Zone" direction again, that's perfectly fine with me.--Pete Mesling
