"Vacancy" Filled by "When a Stranger Calls" Director

It looks like Hollywood is going to slap another project in the lap of Simon West, most recently known for making a fortune directing an unnecessary remake of "When a Stranger Calls." According to The Hollywood Reporter, West is in talks to be the man behind the camera of "Vacancy," a horror thriller that Screen Gems is hoping to put into production in June of this year.

I suppose there's this much to say in favor of "Vacancy": it doesn't appear to be a remake, though the plot sounds kind of like a sleepy take on the "Saw" theme, if the IMDb description can be trusted (it lists Hal Lieberman as the director, though The Hollywood Reporter states that he's only producing). Apparently a couple finds themselves in trouble when they check into a motel fitted with hidden video cameras and learn that they must either escape or become the stars of a snuff film. I can already hear myself cheering for their demise.--Pete Mesling
