Trailer Park: "30 Days of Night," "Sweeney Todd," and "AVP: Requiem"

Huzzah! It's that time of year! Time when horror fans revel in the slew of new films vying for our attention both at the box office and on TV. Recently, new trailers and stills have been circling for three very different theatrical releases that I am itching to see.

This month, the big movie I'm holding my breath for is "30 Days of Night," the vampire tale based on the graphic novel about a town in Alaska over run by vampires just when the sun goes away for a month. It looks pretty darned good, despite staring Josh Hartnet as the lead. Sure, it may turn out to be utterly awful, but it seems just the right kind of movie to go watch with a crowd of jumpy teenagers. These days, that's the main reason I actually go to a theater - the crowd reaction adds an extra thrill for desensitized folks like me who never jump at seemingly obvious scares any more. The film is set for release October 19th.

This next one is on my list of "must see" films. Tim Burton's "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" will be released on December 21st, staring, of course, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. There's not much I can say about this movie. It looks like any other brilliant Burton/Depp collaboration - with extra gore and creepiness. I cannot WAIT!

Finally, "Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem" is set for release December 25th. A new trailer for this second installment of the "Aliens vs. Predator" saga recently hit IGN and is making its rounds on the interweb (though it seems to be just a less graphic version of the age restricted trailer previously released). While I didn't *hate* the first "AVP," it wasn't even in the same league as any of the "Alien" or "Predator" films (ok, maybe it was in the ballpark of "Predator 2"). At least this time the battle is taken to the people instead of some silly underground temple in Antarctica. That was just lame.

Of course, these aren't the only horror flicks set for release in the next couple of months. The folks over at the aptly named have a list of the upcoming big and not-so-big horror movies to be released to theaters, on TV and DVD. Ah... I do so love this time of year. -- Shannon
