I remember hearing about this video a bit back from a friend at dinner and, well, he was right... amazing. The fact that a game's engine and world are so embellished with these kinds of intricacies only forces people like myself to become incredibly intrigued. While one would hope that the game will be entirely open ended (not sandboxed, just open ended), no promises just yet. The first Far Cry had some exploration, but Crysis did not... lets take advantage of this ridiculous environments.

Speaking of sweet new physics engines, and this is nothing new, but Epic has released some footage of the new-ish, tweaked Gears of War 2 engine (this November, gauge your eyes out in anticipation). Check that below.

Twice says that just a week into the seasonal shopping frenzy, the gaming manufacturer has sold more than 350,000 Wii consoles and 653,000 DS units.

I am wondering how high these numbers will rise before the last bow is tied this Christmas.

Has anyone seen a Wii since Black Friday? The only ones that I've seen are on eBay, in case you're in need of a good Christmas gouging.

The shortages might have something to do with the assumption that the DS will take the top selling spot for 2007. The $129 price tag isn't too shabby either. -- Rachel Cericola

When Nintendo seriously dedicates itself to producing and developing a title, one can expect some fantastic results. Super Mario Galaxy is no different.

Making good use of the Nintento Wii's input devices, players are tasked with, once again, saving the princess from Bowser. These games have never been all about their plotlines, so it seems a bit forgivable for the Mario franchise to return to their money making machine. After all, what makes sense about an Italian plumber in a land of mushrooms that don't get you high? Nothing.

Others have compared the greatness of this installment to its Ancestor, Super Mario Bros. 3... and I am not here to disagree. Coming into the game with nothing more than a few gameplay clips has served me quite well as seeing each and every ability Mario gains for the first time is nothing short of fantastic. It's like being 6 or 7 all over again and finally getting the Racoon Suit for the first time. A childlike rush only Mario could provide.

Straying away from the plot and the childhood reminiscence, I'd like to consider the gameplay mechanics and how they work on the Wii. Well, the Wii is Nintendo's console and as Super Mario Galaxy is one of their only true, legitimate offspring for the system, one would hope that the game would feel truly designed with the Wii in mind. It does. The Wii-mote never seems forced on the user. There are no gimmicky motions that players have to evoke, and never will you find yourself yelling at the TV while your cursor flies off in a random direction. The game was built for the Wii, and you can tell.

And for anyone that has even seen one small portion of a gameplay clip, you already know about the ridiculous perspective the game takes. Mario traverses over planets both big and small, but because of the perspective the camera takes, Mario can be running upside down or sideways. Each planet has its own center of gravity while Mario can jump or be launched between them. Check the clip for a better idea (forgive the aspect ratio).

To me, this experience of not really knowing which end is up is fantastic. It almost harkens back to the greatness that was and is my favorite level in all of video game history. The Milkman level in Psychonauts. Check the vid to see it for yourself.

With wonderful gameplay dynamics and a fantastic use of the Wii-mote, you owe Super Mario Galaxy a place on your shelf. The game will certainly never tire and neither will you. Pick this one up, you'll love it.

While most gaming sites have spent some time meticulously pouring over game elements in order to come up with some ridiculous quantitative value to represent the fun they had (or didn't), I propose something a little different. I feel that quantitative reviews are, frankly, garbage. I don't think that for films, however, but video games especially deserve a better system than numbers to rate their quality. Having the conversation with a bunch of critics on how to correctly and quantitatively review a video game would be absolutely ridiculous. I do recognize the simplicity of a 5-star review system, even a simple 1-10. But when reviewers (whomever could I be talking about) give 5 separate 1-10 scores and come up with some ludicrous mid-range real number (e.g. 6.8) and claim that this real number is "Not an Average," a little part of me wants do explode through the internet wires and uppercut them to the moon. If you are going to score a game in 5 different areas with 5 different scores and then give an overall score, how can that overall score not be an average? Get what I'm saying? It's like you are grading the game on 5 areas that don't matter. Then you're ignoring your scores and rating the game somewhere on the Fun-O-Meter... Super Mario Bros. gets a 9.875 on the Fun-O-Meter (not an average).

How the %#*@ do you get a 9.875 from anything other than an average!?!?

I digress. Basically, although it may seem like it, that little rant is not necessarily meant to be directed simply at reviewers. I'd also like it to stand as a point, reviewers are simply human. They play a game and then they give it a score. I'm sure someone somewhere told them that it needed to be an asinine real number in order to be a good review. "Real numbers make you look like a computer. Don't you want to look like a computer?" But can they really do anything beyond guess? No. They think about the game and then throw a number at it. It is not a science.

Therefore, I propose that we simply do not give quantitative reviews to a video game. Films are one thing, 2 hours and you're done. You can sum up the quality of a film with simple numbers. Is it perfect? No. Does it serve as a fantastic benchmark for the better understanding a film? No. But critics and viewers don't invest the same amount of time and fundage in a film as they do in a video game. It is my opinion that video games should be simply given either a recommendation or a desperate plea to move on.

"You absolutely must try this game" is a lot more direct than a "7.9." So good, it could have been an 8.0.

So what the hell does this have to do with Assassin's Creed? It serves as a reaction to the overabundance of reviews and comments that have been swelling up all across the net. While it may seem a bit defensive (it is), that is not it's purpose. I merely wanted to point out that there is a reason why I won't be giving Assassin's Creed a numerical value... because that's complete bullshit.

Onto the matter at hand. Like so many others I finally got a chance to sit down and spend some serious time with Assassin's Creed yesterday, and before I say anything else I want you all to know that the game is an undeniable good time.

It's not without its hangups, but the overall experience is very rewarding. Being able to scale any building and stand atop it as you plan your next move is simply exhilarating. The key word there is 'plan.' In order to get the most out of Assassin's Creed you simply cannot rush through it. Spend some time in the kingdom and explore. Pick fights for no damn reason at all. Punch the crap out of some crazies (no, the guards won't stop you until you draw a weapon). Do these things, and you'll have an amazing time.

That's really where the game fails (if you can call it a failure). AC relies on its players to become completely immersed in the game world. (Semi-Spoiler Begins)The side-plot offers up some fantastic metaphorical likeness to the world of the protagonist and our own. Without ruining anything for those who haven't spent any time with the title, Ubisoft wanted players to be immersed in the game so completely that they forced the hero's immersion onto them as well. You have to stay in sync with the game in order to fully enjoy it. (Ends) And while this may seem like quite a task, Ubisoft(in my opinion) has done everything they can to keep that level of immersion at it's highest. Including the option to change the camera angle in a dialog whenever you see a glitch, which I think is a huge leap forward. While it may expose the game's engine weaknesses, it allows players an opportunity to move on and stay within the bounds of the game world.

As for the minor hangups...

The combat system has its head scratching moments. You'll wonder why you don't use a counter against everyone.

The horse physics are great, but you don't get your own horse for keepsies. No Epona to love and cherish this time around. Take anyone's horse, they don't even care.

The loading screens make you listen to the same damned tips over and over.

Finally, the smarts of the AI isn't quite at the level of perfection Ubisoft had indicated. It seems a huge task to get AI perfect, and while AC does well most of the time, the game will make you laugh out loud over some bonehead guards.

Almost everywhere else, the game truly does everything right. The game is not tedious unless you make it so. Sure, you could only do one type of intel work over and over in order to open up the opportunity to get your kill, but why would you spend 60 bucks on a game just to blaze through it? I implore other assassins out there to actually collect every bit of intel they can on a target before swooping in for the kill. I'm sure you'll find the final blow much more rewarding after you here all about the SOB's wicked ways.

After an unnecessarily long rant and a simply short review, I leave you with a recommendation. You should really give Assassin's Creed a try. If you've just purchased Super Mario Galaxy, or plan to devote yourself to Mass Effect save Assassin's Creed for when you are finished. As my roommate pointed out, AC doesn't seem like a game you can put on the shelf for a while and come back to later. Give it the full attention it deserves.

Erik here with fantastic news concerning games. Game Informer has posted the cover to their December issue where readers can find a exclusive scoop on THE NEW GHOSTBUSTERS GAME!!!!!

Thats right, a Ghostbusters game is in development and it is the sequel to Ghostbusters 1 and 2. Now you might be nervous if the game developers can bottle the charm of the movies and translate it to video game form, right? Well put those worries aside as Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd will be penning the game script and joining Bill Murray to lend their voices for their respective characters from the films.

This short news scoop on Game Informer's webpage doesn't reveal much more than the information I just presented, so I will have to wait till the magazine drops to read the full article. I don't even know the developers behind the project but I can say this Ghostbusters game has nothing to do with the Zootfly Ghostbusters prototype that hit the internet to much buzz earlier in the year.

With this announcement blowing up the interwebs, I am sure there were a lot of nerdgasms from kids like this....

.......But then again, they do have something worth celebrating.

Have someone take away your internet and see how it feels. It's like a gigantic, never-ending titty-twister of darkness and despair. Fire and brimstone rained down upon my apartment for those awful days. And when the fine gentleman came to fix it, yes we restarted the router and yes we were sure it worked, he proceeded to give me the what's for about making sure your router is configured correctly... Little did he know, I brought in a cable signal tester from work and I knew exactly what the problem was.

Regardless, 10 dollar discount later, here I am.

Assassin's Creed.

Somewhere between all the Developer's Diaries and sweet trailers, you've got to be asking yourself 'is this game really all it makes itself out to be?' While I have yet to be lucky enough to take a test drive, reviews are already flooding the interwebbing that surrounds us, binds us and penetrates us (haha, yea); all of which have been raving. Averaging a current score of 9.5 (according to Gamestats.com), Assassin's Creed is proving to be nothing short of a wonderful experience.

For those of you that don't know what this one's about, here goes: you play as an assassin during the crusades, beaten down to nearly nothing at the game's onset. You must earn back your right to be a part of the group of Assassins again by finishing off the lives of 9 men that did, in fact, die in the exact year this game takes place. AC offers up 3 massive and historically accurate cities all joined by one sprawling kingdom for you to explore on horseback.

Enjoy a trailer and, after that, go score a copy. Although the GameStop by me claims to have copies in tomorrow and not today... those jerks.

Source: ign.com

From an article on ign.com, it seems Microsoft has big plans for its 5 year birthday of Xbox Live. Come December 5th, Xbox Live subscribers can boot up their 360 for an auto update which give gamers access to full original Xbox games on the Xbox Live Marketplace. A move that is surely copying the success of Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console, Microsoft is giving gamers the option to download Halo, Psychonauts, Crimson Skies: Road to Revenge, Fables, and a few unannounced games at this time for a mere 1200 Microsoft points, roughly $15.

But that isn't all folks, on November 15th, the actual 5 year anniversary of Live, Microsoft is giving every gamer on Live a free Xbox Arcade download. Korean gamers will receive Hexic 2, while everyone else in the world gets Carcossonne. And finally, every Live subscriber that has been around since 2002 will get 500 free Microsoft points.

All around this is great news. A virtual console, much like Wii's, is the logical next step for the Xbox Marketplace, and its great to see them finally getting around to it. The selection of initial games is also fantastic merely because Psychonauts is among the games to choose from. The game is so rare to actually find in stores, and is such a fantastic game that everyone should try it out, it surely comes highly recommended from myself. And while I can't speak for either of the arcade games being given away, I will gladly take anything with the label "free" on it, and give it a shot. Though I never want to try pronouncing the title of the game North Americans will have access too. I am also happy about the free 500 points because I think I apply for that deal. I remember buying Xbox Live when Unreal Championship first came out, making my ownership of Live roughly 5 years. So....yay for me.

But really this is about every gamer with an Xbox and Live benefiting from the anniversary and its great to see Microsoft taking the time to give something back to the fans that support them.

I leave you with the fine trailer for Psychonauts....GET THIS GAME!

Good news for all Guitar Hero III owners as the first wave of downloadable content has poured onto the marketplace. The first set of choices are two "Band Packs",as I like to call them, for the Foo Fighters and Velvet Revolver. The Foo pack contains The Pretender" off their newest album Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace, "This is a Call" off their debut self-titled album, and "All My Life" off One By One. I couldn't be happier with the selections the Guitar Hero crew have chosen for the Foo Pack as they are some pretty rockin' songs from my favorite band, which I now get to play over and over as a mock guitar god. The second pack comes from the band Velvet Revolver, Slash's post Guns & Roses crew. Containing "She Builds Quick Machines" and "Messages" from their 2007 album Libertad, along with "Slither" from their 2004 debut Contraband. Though Velvet Revolver is anything but one of my favorite bands, its still more tracks to add to the Guitar Hero portfolio.

The only downside to these packs is that they cost money, the real kind. So after purchasing Guitar Hero III anywhere from $60-100, you now have to pay $6.25 per pack in order to enjoy the new tracks. I purchased the Foo pack because they are my favorite band, but am still hesitant to pick up the Velvet Revolver songs due to pricing. I figure purchasing songs that you know you'll play multiple times, or from your favorite bands, seems like a worthy investment. So everyone should jump on live and take a gander at the selection and decide for yourself if these music packs are worth it. If you are also curious how the songs actually translate to Guitar Hero, you can download "preview" packs for free.

By way of IGN.com, this Nintendo jerk has been alerted to possibly one of the best reasons to fight off tryptophan and head out to Sears early Friday morning after Thanksgiving.

Black Friday ads have started leaking all over the net, and in the ad for Sears comes two new Nintendo DS Lite versions. The one I'm interested in features my favorite Tri-Force hunting, bow and arrow shooting, adventurer. That's right, check the pic below and you'll find a most excellent version of the DS that has current owners considering "accidentally" spiking their DSs on the ground in hopes that the immediate depression gained from loss will fuel their need to work the overtime necessary to afford this $149.99 bundle. The bundle includes the sweet, sweet DS pictured below as well as a copy of Phantom Hourglass, which, by the way, if you do not have you should die a horrible death attributed only to mosquito bites and Jell-o overdose.

Coming sometime in 2008 is another reason for PSP owners to love their little portable. Star Wars: Force Unleashed promises to be one of the greatest entries into the Star Wars video game franchise of all time. Giving players access to a whole slew of new force abilities, the title's developers have said that it will deliver the universe so many are familiar with in an over-the-top, adrenaline filled onslaught. Fans will be taking control of one of the strongest Jedi of all time.

Furthermore, PSP owners will have their own content to look forward to. Developers claim that the PSP version of the game will have ready-to-play modes that have been specifically desined with the concept of gaming on the move in mind. Players will be able to jump into a nice mini-game if they so desire. The PSP version also has a few new places to explore. All of this will be packed onto the tiny UMD while not taking anything away from the George Lucas approved (is that really a good thing?) storyline that will be present in the console versions. By approved, I think they mean that Lucas threw money at it until it was the right shade of green.

Regardless, enjoy the vid below.

In light of its upcoming release, a new trailer for Naruto: Rise of the Ninja has hit the net. Check the trailer.

An Xbox 360 exclusive, this entry in the Naruto series boasts the best graphics. Pushing the game even further, this is also the first Naruto to combine both adventure modes and fighting modes. While the adventure mode is focused entirely around completing missions and making the members of Konoha village happy, it seems to be remedial action. Typical 'Collect This,' 'Deliver That' type stuff.

The fighting mode of the game is sure to be much like the fighting in the Nintendo Gamecube predecessors. Fast-paced, combo-filled madness. The series has always been friendly to button mashers, but those that know what they are doing almost always come out on top. This time, players aren't restricted to local play. One can make a trip to the 'Forrest of Death,' a giant ongoing tournament where people rank up based on results of each contest. At any given time anyone can jump into a battle at their level and either move up or down according to their performance.

Further breaking the monotony of Naruto fighters is the new special move system. If a player activates a special their character will fly into an attack cutscene. Rather than being forced to either watch as you get pummeled or do the pummeling, players engage in a fast mini-game. They will either race to press buttons or dodge their assailant's cross hairs as the cutscene nears its completion. The performance of each player decides the amount of damage dealt.

Sure to be a blast, don't miss out on Naruto: Rise of the Ninja.

A new gameplay video for the latest Resident Evil shows of some of the game's shooting mechanics. Umbrella Chronicles is a first person shooter set to "interactive rails." Players will be guided around levels as zombies pop-up House of the Dead style. Check the vid.

This is where the bickering starts. Is it just me, or does this game look downright crappy? I, for one, am not too thrilled to be glued-down to a specific pathway. But if I am going to be glued-down, at least give me an awesome weapon, fantastic visuals and a very responsive set of violent physics. The visuals do seem to be glorious for those of the Wii. But doesn't it seem a bit strange that zombies need to be put down with more than one headshot? Shoot them in the face, they die. Why is that so hard to comprehend?? Here, the undead get shot in the face and all they do is lean back a little, bare their teeth and come in for more brains.

Oh, and I was truly terrified when the giant crab claw ripped into the ceiling. If it wasn't for the crab-picking mallet I keep on me at all times, I think I would have been a'goner.

Every week(ish) Bungie.net does its relatively standard weekly update. Amidst plenty of colloquialisms, there is always a sparing amount of news and almost never anything to truly 'go-on'.

This week may seem par for the course, but within the lengthy post there seems to be information abound. According to Frankie, this upcoming Halloween will allow Halo 3 players a chance to enjoy some festive fun;

"Our multiplayer design teams are hard at work on a couple of things. One of them is a fun, seasonal addition to the matchmaking playlist which should keep you entertained for about 27 hours around Halloween. No specifics yet, but suffice it to say that if you want to spend your witchy holiday playing Halo 3, we’ll give you some spooktacular reasons to do so."

My bet is a new Infection playlist... what's more Halloween than Zombies with swords? I dare not even consider.

Frankie goes on to rant about at least 3 new maps that will be available, how does he put it?... when they're finished. One he dubs 'Purple Reign' seems to be something very symmetrical while the other two he talks about are huge. Both of the giant maps support vehicles, but one doesn't need them. Man Cannons galore? Let's hope the symmetrical map is something a lot like Midship, and I won't buy Isolation as the new Midship, sorry.

What started as a mind-numbingly nerdy tabletop board game, the Warhammer series has evolved into something much more accessible. Warhammer 40,000 is set in the typical, science fiction, far away galaxy in an unknown time period. The universe features several races including both Space Marines (humans) and Orc. While the tabletop games make no qualms about good vs evil, the later released PC version does.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War integrated the once tabletop only game onto the personal computer. With less painting... A squad based RTS, Dawn of War featured several ground breaking advances in the RTS world. The combat system relies heavily on terrain, giving players taking cover a huge armor and damage bonus, while players exposed and surrounded are extremely vulnerable. The game also puts a wonderful spin on the concept of gathering resources. Rather than forcing peons to mine for gold and ore, in Dawn of War, the commander sends out tactical squads to capture strategic points. These strategic points provide the resources necessary to call in drops from space. Dawn of War moved RTS games away from the tediousness of micromanaging into the world of tactical conquest.

So how does the demo for the PSP stack up?

To put it shortly, not like it's predecessor. The game seems to lack all that made Dawn of War glorious, the ability to capture points or build units, not present in the demo.

Essentially, imagine Final Fantasy Tactics and you've basically got Squad Command. There are only two playable races; Space Marines and Chaos. In the demo, you're given 5 Marines and a giant mech. You can choose which guns and how much ammo each unit carries. This is where the game shines. The amount of ammo carried by a unit directly affects the overall weight of the unit, and thus, how far the unit can move per turn. This is turned based combat, so you move your squad into position and then fire. Having some light weight units seemed handy in gaining a hold on a certain part of the map. I simply left the heavy dudes in the back, waiting for the enemy to try and overrun me. When they did, I let them have it. Each unit is given a certain number of "Action Points" that it can use per turn. You can use these points to either move or attack, or both if you move a little and attack a little.

Another sweet plus for the game is the destructible environment. So a wall is in your way? Get your giant mech to blow it up. Some guys are standing next to a fuel line, light it up and kill the whole lot of em'. Having a fully \destructible environment goes a long way for taking an OK turn based strategy game towards something worth owning.

The game will be available this winter, so do yourself a favor and score the demo. The game doesn't offer much in terms of explanation, so just give yourself a good solid 2 hours, and you'll conquer what little space you're given.

With the November 12th U.S. release date fast approaching, 3 more gameplay videos of the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy have been released on gametrailers.com.

The first video, included below, shows off footage of our favorite mustached, Italian plumber romping his way through a few small planets. Mario's mission, big surprise here, is to collect a few stars. Watch him do so in style.

While the above footage clearly displays the graphical and stylistic achievements of the Wii's first Mario title, it doesn't do much to enlighten us on some of the other gameplay mechanics and features. For instance, we never truly get a chance to see the multiplayer potential. Japanese TV spots have been sporting a glimpse at this side of the adventure for quite some time. One multiplayer mode is done cooperatively. One player moves Mario while the other aids him. One could assume that this would give the second player the opportunity to interfere with Mario's progress.

Dig a vid...

The girl is Player 1 and the guy is Player 2. He starts out by explaining the control scheme and then tells her to jump on the baddies. After she seems unable to defeat the goomba, he says he should save her. She agrees. At this point we see Player 2's cursory star over top of a crushed goomba. He is basically holding the goomba down while she gets to whomping. Player 1 controls Mario while Player 2 interacts (positively or negatively) with the environment about Player 1. Seems like this could either be amazingly fun, or incredibly obnoxious, depending on how you choose your company.

Look forward to Super Mario Galaxy's November 12th release date.
