Heath: Give George an Oscar

Heath Ledger surprised a packed Berlin Film Festival news conference last night when he admitted he believes George Clooney deserves the best supporting actor Oscar this year for his performance in Syriana.

A reporter at the conference alluded to an interview George Clooney had given days before, during which the Syriana star lauded Brokeback Mountain and said the film was an Oscar favorite. The same reporter then posed a loaded question to Heath: "What do you think George Clooney might win?"

Heath responded: "Do I really have to answer the George Clooney one? I think he deserves the best supporting actor. I thought he was amazing in Syriana."

Jake Gyllenhaal, who was Heath's lover and co-star in Brokeback Mountain, is up against George in the best supporting actor category.

Perhaps it was Jake's heavy beard that annoyed Heath.

When one reporter asked what the difference was for him to be making love to a woman in one film and to a man in another, he replied, "The stubble."

Note:

A video of the press conference noted in this article can be downloaded here. The Clooney question is asked around the 14-minute mark.

Bollocks!A comment taken completely out of context. Heath was just being gracious after being asked an spectacularly stupid question. Check for yourselves. Effing media! Anything for a story, what ever happened to fair reporting!?

I doubt this item as I can't find it anywhere else in the news and I think it would have been quoted elsewhere if true.

Except it still is taken out of context because he goes on to talk about Good Night and Good Luck deserving one too because he's heard it was amazing and on IMDB today he has a blurb talking about how all of his competition for best actor also deserves the award. Point being, he thinks competition is surreal and that they all deserve to take home an award. (Towelroad has a statement with a quote from Heath.) I wish people would stop over-reacting already to every little thing he (or Jake) do. It's just going to stress them out and Heath is already stressed when it comes to public interviews.

Ledger said what he said. It's there to be heard. The apologists are spinning it as a case of pressarazzi harassment. Not so. Granted, if you were versed in Clintonian semantics you could possibly sew a "everyone's a winner" out of some
spinmeister whole cloth. If Ledger is that inarticulate, he should not be allowed to participate in anything that isn't tightly scripted.
Nevertheless,as it stands Heath said what he ment & in the process made a motherbucker of a gaffe.
