So, this isn't exactly Independent Film news, but I think I'm allowed to digress now and then. And in this case, I hope you agree with me.
Reports are out today that United 93, the first of several feature films to cover those tragic events of September 2001, will open the Tribeca Film Festival, an event created to recoup the economic losses New York faced after that day. Directed by Paul Greengrass, the film revisits the flight that eventually crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after it became known on board of the other planes' destinies.
Please, take a few minutes and watch the preview here. Movies are off to a slow start this year, so I'm hopeful that a film as valuable as this one draws audiences into theaters. The Saturday after 9/11, then-Mayor Giuliani appeared on Saturday Night Live to assure the country that it was OK to laugh. Five years later, it's finally OK (and necessary) to take a serious look at the courage of a group of strangers.
The film opens in theaters on April 28th and will screen for festival attendees, including victim's families, on April 25.
