Cinematical Interview: Jason Reitman

One of my favorite sites, whether I'm looking for news to share with you or just brushing up on my movie news, is Cinematical. The team over there seems to leave no rock uncovered when it comes to Hollywood happenings. Next to reviews, casting developments and distribution deals, the contributors seem to be in the right place and the right time when interview opportunities arise.

Today, Kim Voynar shares her talk with Jason Reitman, director of Thank You for Smoking and son of Ivan. She cornered him while he was in Seattle for a screening of his first feature film and set to asking him all the insightful questions you or I wouldn't have thought of. (ok, she didn't corner him...in fact, she notes that he seemed like a pretty normal guy.)

Reitman talks about growing up on movie sets, sad to report that he was never treated like crap ("You're not a production assistant unless someone treats you like shit, and no one did that to me."), and discloses the advice his mother gave him that got him through his first day. You can read the interview in its entirity here, but I'll leave you with the bit of advice Reitman has for aspiring filmmakers:

I think it’s a mistake for young filmmakers to just buy digital equipment and shoot a feature – make short films first, make your mistakes and learn from them. By the time I got to directing, I’d learned so much – if I’d made this film five years ago it would have been a much less polished film.
