Now that 'Brokeback Mountain' has busted the "gay-themed" gate wide open in theaters across the country, smaller-budget films have a better chance than ever to reach audiences. Adam & Steve, from Funny Boy Features and distributed by TLA Releasing, hits 13 markets today, expanding to 14 more cities in the coming weeks.
The second feature from Funny Boy (2003's Latter Days was first), Adam & Steve is about two men who meet once at a club in the 80s then reconnect some twenty years later. Producer Kirkland Tibbles is optimistic about the new attention being paid to films with homosexual themes, and asserts their necessity. In a Reuters report, he says, "There's plenty of what's wrong with our culture onscreen -- our struggles, our plights -- and I'm looking to create more heroic journeys."
The studio, dubbed the first dedicated soley to gay and lesbian films, is taking a no-holds barred approach to the release, expecting Adam & Steve to surpass the 100 screens Latter Days saw. With a little help from a recognizable cast, including Parker Posey, Malcolm Gets, SNL alum Chris Kattan and Craig Chester (also the writer/director), the filmmakers hope to capitalize on the current wave of interest in a post-Brokeback Hollywood.
Says Tibbles, "Before 'Brokeback,' no studio execs were calling, but now a few have been asking 'What else have you got?'"
