Though most notable film festivals are in glittering places like Toronto, Cannes or...Park City...one that's gaining a following happens to be right in my own back yard. The Indianapolis International Film Festival kicks off today, and by the time it's over on May 4th, over one hundred different films will have been screened for Indy audiences.
Only in it's third year, the festival is a baby among big brothers like the Sundance Film Festival, which is already in it's twenties. But IIFF has surged with growth spurts every year, moving from one theater in 2004 to sites around the city this week. They'll host screenings at museums, college campus buildings and even the newest theater on Indianapolis's map, Keystone Arts and Indie Lounge. You probably can't walk from screening to screening, but you certainly can't go far in the city without bumping into a chance to catch a film.
And which film do you choose? I won't be making it to many screenings, but on my list of ones to make time for are The King, a Gael Garcia Bernal vehicle about a Mexican-American looking for his father, and Be With Me, a minimalistic look from Singapore at life and love and destiny. Also high on my list is U-Carmen eKhayelitsha, a South African film loosely based on the opera Carmen. It won top honors in Berlin and is currently making US Festival rounds. The schedule also includes shorts series arranged by themes, including work, family, comedy and New York-centric films.
If you're in the Indianapolis area, make plans to catch a few movies. Tickets are $10 for individual screenings. A 10-ticket bundle is available for $65; if you split it with a friend, you'll have plenty of tickets to get you in and a friend to go with, too!
And if you see a far-too-serious-looking twenty something girl totally wrapped up in the film, that's me. Say hi.
Do you hear about
