Reuters reports that First Look Studios has inked a deal to put A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, a double-winner at January's Sundance Film Festival, in movie theaters across the country. The release is the first since Ruth Vitale took the helm at the studio, which plans to release up to twelve independent films this year.
Saints, the first film from writer/director Dito Montiel, is an autobiographical feature about his childhood in Queens, NY. At first a book, Montiel began with short films depicting specific memories. When a friend took the shorts to Robert Downey, Jr (who'd eventually portray Montiel in the feature version), the two put the budding filmmaker into the Sundance Institute and brought producers Sting and wife Trudy Styler on board.
Premiering at Sundance this year, the feature-length version of Montiel's book brought him a directing award and the cast (including Downey, Chazz Palminteri, Rosario Dawson, Shia LaBeouf, Channing Tatum and Eric Roberts) a special jury prize for their ensemble performance.
The film is scheduled for wide release in September (better known as early Oscar season); there doesn't seem to be a trailer floating around for the film just yet. If you know of one, share the wealth.
