Like any art from, film is constantly evolving, new ways of making films always coming and going. Richard Linklater's A Scanner Darkly is certainly the first of it's kind, a sort of graphic-novel-turned- half-animation-movie. The film is based on a novel by Philip K Dick and boasts quite a cast--Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Robert Downey, Jr., and Woody Harrelson among them (reads like a who's who of Hollywood misfits, doesn't it?!). The actors are real; it's the way their splashed on screen that's new, animated as if someone turned on the coloring book feature in photoshop.
Only time and a summer release will tell if this new way of animating actors will fly with audiences; in the meantime, Warner Independent Pictures has a little challenge for aspiring, innovative filmmakers. The studio is offering the official trailer up for download; once it's yours, you can re-edit and rework it any way you see fit. Submissions are due by June 7 and the winner not only gets an expense-paid trip to the premiere, but a brand new Adobe Editing suite, too. Sure beats free popcorn.
According to the site, it's average Joes that'll pick the winner; the last step in the contest is to point friends and adoring fans to jumpcut.com to vote for your piece.
So get crackin', innovative minds and exceptional eyes. A free trailer and chance at glory awaits!
I love this shit!
