Variety reports that Sony Classics has picked up the North American distribution rights to Driving Lessons, Rupert Grint's first dive into a film outside of the Harry Potter franchise. The film premiered at Tribeca and is currently screening in Cannes.
The film's generated a fair amount of buzz, thanks in no small part to writer Jeremy Brock. His Mrs. Brown was an unexpected hit about ten years ago. The story is semi-autobiographical; Grint plays an aspiring poet who takes a summer job with a one-time stage siren (Julie Walters). She convinces him to accompany her on a road trip from London to Scotland and hilarity (or drama, perhaps) ensues.
Lessons has international distribution secured, as well, though not with Sony Classics. No release dates have been set.
sorry for the double post .. but i meant international release ... & we'll really be thankful if u could explain more ...
-- Posted by: hhhhh at May 24, 2006 08:53 AMHey h, thanks for checking in. I did a little digging and found the film listed on Content Films' site. They're the ones doing the international distribution, and the page is here: http://www.contentfilm.com/index.php/film_tv/all_film_tv/new_productions/6.html
While there's no word on that page regarding the international distribution, there is a link at the bottom of the page for "request more information." Perhaps you can contact someone there who'll have more answers for you!
Enjoy the show!

Hi
Actually, this isn't Ruperts first foray outside the harry potter series.
Infact, The Harry potter series wasn't Rupert Grints first acting job.
He played a very young geek in a film called ThunderPants, about a boy genius (rupert grint) who invented a rocket powered by his best friends Flatulence.
Just thought the whomping Willow should put you right on that!

-- Posted by: griffinsbridge at May 25, 2006 06:12 AMThunderpants was not Rupert's first acting movie. Harry Potter was. Rupert filmed Thunderpants after SS/PS and before Chamber of Secrets.
So, no Driving Lessons isn't Rupert's first movie outside of Potter, but Thunderpants was not his first film. SS/PS was...:)
-- Posted by: AJ at May 25, 2006 08:33 PMThanks for all the feedback, guys. I had no idea Thunderpants was in there, too. Sounds like quite a masterpiece. ;) However seasoned an actor he is, we can all agree that Driving Lessons will be a big boost to Grint's career!
