IndieWIRE reports today that Off the Black, starring Nick Nolte and Trevor Morgan, was snagged by independent distributor ThinkFilm; the company plans on shopping international rights at Cannes later this month.
Off the Black is the third film from writer/director James Ponsoldt, and IndieWIRE describes it as the "coming-of-age story of teenager who copes with his own distant father by forming an unlikely friendship with a disheveled, irascible high school umpire." Who do you think plays the ump?
The film screened at Sundance in January, and while other features (like Steve Carell's Little Miss Sunshine) found distributors on the spot, most weren't so lucky. Better late than never, though, as it's likely ThinkFilm can get Black in front of extensive audiences. They're apparently happy to do it, too. IndieWIRE quotes a VP:
James is a wonderful, classical storyteller, and he has shown equal strength with a veteran like Nick and a newer performer like Trevor, both of whom are absolutely marvelous in the film
Keep an eye out for Off the Black in your local theater listings.
