Earlier this year, City Lights Media Group (in association with LionsGate) inked a deal to distribute Tamara, a thriller about a bookish teen who, after being picked on her whole life, returns in death as a sexy seductress to have her revenge. (It's at a 32% over at Rotten Tomatoes, if that tells you anything...).
Just announced is the pending distribution of City Lights's second film, "Suicide Killers." A far cry from the Carrie-esque Tamara, Killers is a stark documentary investigating the machinery behind suicide bombers. The film delves into interviews with family members, friends and, in some cases, bombers themselves whose attacks have been thwarted. The film is by director Pierre Rehov who, from the looks of his website, has an invested interest in the ever-evolving events in the Middle East.
What's interesting about City Lights's timing is the Oscar eligibility this guarantees the film. A week long run in August means it's in theaters in time to be considered for next year's awards. A larger yet selective distribution is planned.
And if it happens to get some attention from Oscar, you can bet the distribution will only grow.
