Cinematical Interviews Kirby Dick, Filmmaker

kirby dick.JPGProlific bloggers at Cinematical always have something interesting up their sleeves. This time, it's an interview with documentarian Kirby Dick, the man behind "This Film Is Not Yet Rated." The movie's the first of its kind, pulling the mask off of the MPAA, that governing body that decides whether your film gets the beloved PG-13 nod or is relegated to R status.

The largest complaint among filmmakers is that there's no rhyme or reason to the board's methods. Dick's film ends up resembling a Sherlock Holmes mystery, as the board keeps their identities and practices so tightly under wraps that he hires private investigators to reveal their secrets.

The interview over at Cinematical covers all kinds of ground, from critism Dick's taken for not offering solutions to the board's shortcomings to how many filmmakers refused to talk to him on camera for fear of the MPAA's leverage over their films. Dick is insightful and articulate without attacking the MPAA. One of the best points made is how, if anyone actually did know how they came to their conclusions, filmmakers would not only know what to expect but keep it in mind when crafting their film.
