Searchlight and Wes Anderson Team Up

anderson.JPGDirector Wes Anderson is parting ways with three-time backer Touchstone Pictures to helm a film for Searchlight, Fox's independent/art house arm.

Anderson's co-written this feature, The Darjeeling Limited, and shooting is set to begin in India by the end of the year. The film follows three brothers on a pilgrimage through India after their father's death. Casting has Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman and Adrien Brody as the three brothers.

Here's what's not jiving for me: The article describes the journey as "spiritual." But the names associated with the flick say something completely different. Not only is Anderson in charge--he gave us quirky hits like The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou and The Royal Tenenbaums--but Wilson (Wedding Crashers and Life Aquatic, people) and Schwartzman (Rushmore, for crying out loud!) don't exactly scream "soul-searching" or "deep."

Whether the film ends up "spiritual" or not, the team assembled promises to entertain.

I think the film can really have the spiritual theme that may be described.

Of course Brody can pull it all off. The guy made me cry as he ran from buildign to building in The Pianist.

Wilson's roles in The Royal Tenebaums, Bottle Rocket (maybe less with this movie) and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou create an optimistic undertone for his performance in this film.

And Jason Schwartzman went on a somewhat spiritual journey in I [Heart] Huckabees (existential, spiritual; philosophy, religion, it's essentially the same thing). What Schwartzman did in Shopgirl is a strong indication of what he can do with this film.

And we should remember that it's Wes Anderson writing and directing this film. It's not gonna be completely serious. I think everything in Anderson's resume suggests that Wes Anderson can make this an incredible, spiritual film.

I don't know though, I haven't had my coffee this morning, and I'm lethargic from work already
