Because there's a film festival happening somewhere in the world on any given day of the year, I've decided to make Fridays the official Festival News Day. Think you can work with that?
In today's coverage:
-Competition in Venice heats up
-Toronto kicks off and indieWIRE's there
-Heartland announces a complete lineup
VENICE
News is that two dramatic takes on historical events are gunning for awards at the Venice Film Festival. The Queen (pictured) and Bobby are both holding their own as contenders for the Golden Lion. A slew of other films are making a showing, but Lee Marshall, film critic for trade publication Screen International, says of The Queen: "In terms of the possible favorites, I think Frears' 'The Queen' was liked by a lot of people." Which is a strong compliment from a film critic. READ
TORONTO
As with any big fest, the folks at indieWIRE are all over it like butter on popcorn. They've got their people all over the city, and are posting daily dispatches on all the wheeling and dealing. The latest? IFC's already nabbed ...So Goes the Nation, set for release on October 4. D.O.A.P. is turning heads, being called "the most dangerous and breathtakingly original film" fest co-director Noah Cowan has seen in 2006. Keep up at indieWIRE for the latest.
HEARTLAND
The recent announcement of Heartland Film Festival's complete lineup is especially important to me, as I'm on staff there (which I've disclosed before!). That said, I think any festival fan will agree that the list is a solid one. Bookending the fest are Amazing Grace and The Queen; in between, there's a special presentation of clips from the upcoming The Nativity Story, as well as a Q&A with director Catherine Hardwicke. Fifteen films will receive the fest's Crystal Heart Award, and Grand Prize Winners (who'll take home a combined $200,000) are announced on October 21. Opening night is October 19. Get the complete lineup and ticket info here.
There's never a shortage of festival information in the film world. All I'm donig is bringing it to you in one convenient post!
Here is majority info.
