In a change of pace this weekend, a handful of recognizable independent films opened in at least limited theatrical release. The Queen, The Lask King of Scotland, and The Latin Legends of Comedy filled the top three box office spots; all told, the independent box office brought in over $9 million this weekend.
indieWIRE's weekly recap of the box office puts "The Queen" at the top of the heap, with it's premiere at the opening of the New York Film Festival bolstering receipts. Per screen average for the fictional account of the days following Princess Di's death was roughly $40,000. That number's even more impressive when you consider that's at just three screens in NYC.
Character actor Forest Whitaker (pictured) makes his starring mark in "The Last King of Scotland," the drama about Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, which opened to a per screen average of just over $35,000. It was on three screens as well, though in Los Angeles as well as New York.
Third in the top three, the self-distributed "The Latin Legends of Comedy" brought in more than $16,000. The week defined the flick's theatrical run, as it'll be available on DVD on October 10. "Legends" is a doc about three up and coming Latin comedians.
A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Jesus Camp and The Science of Sleep all played well in the numbers; even summer releases like Little Miss Sunshine and The Illusionist are still showing decent numbers.
