Joe Swanberg first hit big with Kissing on the Mouth, the fresh indie flick that won over audiences from Austin to Montreal. That film is an unabashed look at love and sex post-college.
Next, he made LOL and struck gold again. Another honest film, this one tackled the struggle a techno-consumed generation encounters in making human relationships work.
His plate's been pretty full since, between an online soap opera on Nerve.com and dipping into some acting in short films. The latest news is that Swanberg's been tapped to create the previews that play ahead of every film at SXSW Festival in Austin, TX. Unlike previews you catch at your local multiplex, these are mainly platforms to highlight the festival sponsors.
Swanberg's got his work cut out for him. The filmmakers tasked with making these shorts don't go half-assed. In 2001, a series of "vintage" shorts were used. Another year, a BurgerHut series kept audiences entertained.
What will the creative Swanberg come up with for SXSW 2007? If I make it to Austin, I'll let you know.
