With nominees announced this morning, the Gotham Awards annually honor independent film and "authentic voices in American movies," as decided by the Independent Film Project in New York City. Several films enter the running with buzz already surrounding them, and several are sure to generate buzz thanks to the nominations.
Hollywood Reporter lists out the main categories; Half Nelson nabbed the most nods with three nominations--best feature, breakthrough director (Ryan Fleck) and breakthrough actor (Shareeka Epps). Also in the multi-nominated category are Babel, Little Miss Sunshine and the yet-to-secure-U.S.-distrubution In Between Days. Best feature nominees include The Departed, Little Children, Marie Antionette and Old Joy. Read the full story for a list of other breakthrough actor and director noms, as well as the Tribute Awards going to Kate Winslet and Edward Norton.
Almost 150 films were considered in selecting the year's nominees; awards will be presented November 29 in New York City.
So what does this mean for the average movie-goer who won't be in NYC in late November? It says that if there's a good time to see movies, it's now. Announcments like these are just the tip of the iceberg for this time of the year, and this isn't the last time we'll see these titles and filmmakers on the shortlist for awards. If you're a film lover looking for the best of the year, I'd suggest getting to a theater and getting as many of these under your belt as possible. At least, that's my plan.
