The 17th Annual Stockholm International Film Festival wrapped yesterday, passing out awards to films and actors alike. New mom Maggie Gyllenhaal walked with the fest's Best Actress award for her lead role in this year's Sherrybaby. The film, which saw extremely limited release this fall, was also named as the festival's Best Picture.
"Sherrybaby" follows one young woman recently released from prison and struggling to stay sober and regain custody of her daughter. Gyllenhaal's portrayal has been hailed as riveting, and Stockholm's jury called director Laurie Collyer's film "a pure and heartbreaking work about survival and dignity."
Another actor coming into his own this year took the Best Actor award; Ryan Gosling was honored for his role in the sleeper hit Half Nelson, a dark yet moving portrayal of an inner-city teacher with problems of his own.
