Several Docs up for Year's Top Honors

iraq.JPG
There are no Dixie Chicks, no presidents (or vice presidents) and no campers, but the films nominated for the year's Distinguished Documentary Achievement Awards are all thought-provoking and well-made.

Awarded by the International Documentary Assocation (what? you've never heard of them?), the annual honors are bestowed on both feature length and short documentaries. This year's most notable feature-length docs are probably Iraq in Fragments (pictured), about life in the war-torn country, and Deliver Us From Evil, the story of a Catholic priest who admits his pedophilia. "Iraq" has won big in Chicago and Sundance; "Deliver" has made a name for itself on its controversial subject matter.

Also nominated are Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore?, Showbusiness: A Season to Remember and Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars. A complete list of nominees is listed on the IDA homepage.

I'll be honest - I'm not as good as I should be about seeing documentaries. For as much as I enjoy a good doc, sometimes it's just easier to be entertained than to think about what's on the screen. With these noms out, it makes me wonder what I'm missing. Have you seen these? Woul your top five match IDA's?
