Cameron Crowe is 43. He's been in the entertainment business for 28 years. If you do the math you'll see that he began his career at the age of 15. Fif-freakin'-teen!

If you've seen "Almost Famous" you already know a fair amount about Crowe's formative years. At 15 he started writing for major magazines like Creem. At 16 he made the jump to Rolling Stone. When he cracked his early 20s, Crowe jumped into films, penning the classic script for "Fast Times At Ridgemont High." In 1989 he became the hero to teenaged losers everywhere by writing and directing his first film, "Say Anything." Since then he's become one of the best bets in Hollywood, achieving critical and audience acclaim with "Singles," "Jerry Maguire," and the recently-released "Almost Famous."

Crowe has never won an Oscar but "Maguire" nabbed him Best Director and Best Screenplay nominations in 1997. "Almost Famous," a superior film to "Maguire," should earn him the same nominations. Unfortunately, Crowe's humility might work against him in the Director's category—glory hounds and egotists tend to win the big award (exhibit A: James Cameron)—but I'd put my money on Crowe to win the screenwriting Oscar.

  • Crowe, Cruise Get "Vanilla"
Cameron Crowe's next project, "Vanilla Sky," will be a departure for the sweet-centric director. Starring Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, and Penelope Cruz, "Vanilla" is a dark story of a playboy bachelor whose life is sent into chaos after a car accident. A Variety report says the film will be based on the Spanish movie "Abre Los Ojos" ("Open Your Eyes" for you non-Spanish speakers), which also starred Penelope Cruz. Crowe will adapt the screenplay rather than craft an original.
