Hello, pre-"Titanic" Leonardo DiCaprio! Yes, the girlish lad had
quite a stunning career before the big boat, and "The Basketball
Diaries" was just a part of it. But it's a good part, really. Watch
it and be amazed at how the little bugger can actually, like, act.
In "The Basketball Diaries," Leo plays the young poet Jim Carroll,
who dreamt when he was a teenager of becoming a basketball star. But,
as his life got more and more complicated a friend dying of
leukemia, a coach molesting his team of boys, pressure from his
mother he morphed into a big fat junkie. The movie follows his path
to addiction from using once a week, to once a day, to every
hour and shows where a little harmless experimentation will get
you namely, robbing stores, mugging old ladies, and prostituting
yourself for smack money.
