"These are the armies of the night. They are 100,000 strong. They
outnumber the cops five to one. They could run New York City."

Truth be told, there's one reason to like this film: One of its main
actors, Michael Beck, went on to star in "Xanadu." You know...Olivia
Newton-John, Gene Kelly, lots and lots of rollerskating...?
Anyway. "The Warriors" is about gang warfare in good old New York
City. A guy named Cyrus wants to unite all the gangs and take over
the city for real we're talking anarchy, man! He invites delegates
from each major gang to a big pow wow in the Bronx to talk over his
plans. He asks that they all come unarmed, but one bonehead can't
give up packin' the heat, and all hell breaks loose. Peeps get shot,
the truce is done for, and every bad mofo in the city is after The
Warriors, the gang who is blamed for the ensuing carnage.
So that's what this movie is about: The Warriors' night-long battle
to get back to their home turf without getting killed. Each subway
stop brings a new gang and a new all out fistfest; there's cussin',
there's blood, there's that neat punching sound effect--oh boy,
there's lots of that neat punching sound effect. These days
that sort of stuff is run of the mill video game fodder, but back in
1979 when this flick came out, it was some hard hitting stuff. People
tried to get the movie banned because it was so violent and
potentially chaos-inciting. Far as I know, the worst thing that
happened because of "The Warriors" was that people started wearing
leather vests. But really, don't you think that's just as bad as a
big ol' city-burning riot?
