You may have gone through an awkward phase, but I hope it was nothing
like Dawn Weiner's. The main character in "Welcome to the Dollhouse"
is a walking embodiment of all that is horrific about puberty: thick
glasses, grating voice, gangly body, and miniature hoochie-mama
clothes that look like her mom sewed them for her out of patterns in
the back of McCall's. Everyone at school calls Dawn "Weiner
Dog," she can't stand her perfect little ballerina sister, and she's
in love with the studly singer of her brother's garage band. She is
painful to watch, irritating to listen to, and altogether just a
pitiful, sad specimen of teenage girldom, even if you weren't exactly
like her during your formative years.
