Strong Rumor: Tobey Maguire to be Spider-Man

I'm spidey and you're not

Coming Attractions, a site I link to so much I should be set up on an affiliate plan, has just landed a scoop that says Tobey Maguire has been cast as Peter Parker / Spider-Man. Maguire, the star of "Pleasantville" and "The Cider House Rules," has been on a short list of candidates that has included (at one time or another) Leonardo DiCaprio, Freddie Prinze Jr., Jude Law and Heath Ledger. Official word will probably be released Monday. Though some on the Filmfodder staff disagree, I think Maguire is an excellent choice. Spidey, in his early days, is supposed to be an awkward, gangly young man. The other actors rumored for this role were all too bulky, old, or, in the case of DiCaprio, too prepubescent. Maguire has an awkwardness about him, but if these films become a franchise (and there's a great chance they will) I could also see him morphing into a more confident character. So far, director Sam Raimi seems to be moving in a positive direction with this film—let's hope he doesn't crap out like Schumacher did with the Batman movies.
