Pitch Black Director Returns for Multiple Sequels

Variety says David Twohy, director of the 2000 sci-fi sleeper hit "Pitch Black," will return for the "Pitch Black" sequel and possibly the sequel to the sequel to the sequel. Translation: Twohy will be around for film 2 and, if they're greenlighted, films 3 and 4.

Twohy tells Variety that the success of "Lord of the Rings" prompted Universal to embrace an ambitious, multi-film storyline he crafted for the series. The first sequel, titled "Riddick," will zero in on Vin Diesel's character from the first film.

"We'll give Riddick multiple adversaries on different levels," Twohy says. "We think of 'Pitch Black' like 'Mad Max' was to 'Road Warrior,' or 'The Hobbit' was to 'Lord of the Rings.' They were places to find one of your characters, enabling you to take them to different places in subsequent films."

Filming on "Riddick" is scheduled to begin later this year.
