Alien vs. Predator Lures Resident Evil Helmer

Variety reports that Paul Anderson ("Resident Evil") has been hired by Fox to write and direct the long-in-development--wait, check that--the forever-in-development "Alien vs. Predator" project. The story -- a mere formality for this glorified first-person-shooter of a movie -- focuses on stupid scientists who attract predators by hatching alien eggs.

This project first garnered attention in 1990 when Dark Horse Comics released a successful "Aliens vs. Predators" series. Since then, it's been a rumor magnet. My favorite appeared in 2000 and claimed that Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and James Cameron would unite for the film. I wonder why that didn't pan out...

Anderson's hiring is a solid step toward production, but fanboys should contain their twitchy enthusiasm. Even if "Alien vs. Predator" gets made -- and it looks like it will -- Anderson's previous work on films like "Soldier" and "Event Horizon" inspires fear and stomach discomfort, but not confidence. -- Mac Slocum
