Ailing Maguire Puts Spidey 2 in Limbo

Variety reports that a bad back may prompt "Spider-Man" star Tobey Maguire to forfeit his toplining role in the blockbuster's sequel. Maguire's spokeswoman says his injuries are a result of the physically challenging demands of his last two films -- the first "Spider-Man" and the upcoming racehorse drama "Seabiscuit."

"Spider-Man 2" -- officially known as "The Amazing Spider-Man" -- is slated to begin shooting April 12. Kirsten Dunst, who will reprise her role as Mary Jane Watson, is set to start work on another film this summer, and the already once-delayed "Amazing Spider-Man" is on a tight schedule in order to make its May 7, 2004 release date. Who is favored to replace Maguire? According to Variety, Dunst's real-life boyfriend, actor Jake Gyllenhaal ("The Good Girl," Moonlight Mile"), is the top web-slinging contender. -- Ellen Langan
