XXX Sequel: Goodbye Vin, Hello Cube

In one fell swoop, the sequel to "XXX" just got interesting. The Hollywood Reporter says "XXX" star Vin Diesel and director Rob Cohen ("The Fast and the Furious") will not return for the sequel. Instead, the story will switch to a new character, played by Ice Cube, and director Lee Tamahori ("Die Another Day") will helm the follow-up.

The Reporter says Revolution Studios plans to introduce a new "XXX" protagonist in each sequel, thereby setting the stage for a no-holds-barred extreme-sports bloodbath in "XXX 7: There Can Be Only One."

Diesel and Cohen will receive executive producer credits on "XXX 2" (or whatever they call it), which likely means they'll get a pile of money for doing a whole lot of nothing.

The "XXX" sequel is scheduled for release in 2005.--Mac Slocum
