Episode III Title Announced

Lucasfilm took the wraps off the official title for "Episode III" on Saturday at the Comic-Con convention in San Diego. The soon-to-be-emblazoned-on-everything title is "Revenge of the Sith."

The Associated Press says Steve Sansweet, Lucsafilm director of content management and head of fan relations, unveiled the title to 6,500 convention attendees by whipping off a baseball jersey to reveal a "Revenge of the Sith" t-shirt. It was a moment of pure drama, no doubt.

"Revenge of the Sith" shares a similar design with the "Return of the Jedi" logo (see above), a fact not lost on 35-year-old Comic-Con attendee Barren Wright. "This takes it back to the classic trilogy," Wright tells the AP. "It's a smart move by Lucasfilm to tie it all together since the logo and everything is identical to 'Return of the Jedi.'"

But will it have Ewoks?

For those whose "Star Wars" mythology is a little rusty, says the Sith are "masters of the dark side of the Force and the sworn enemies of the Jedi. They were all but exterminated by the Jedi a thousand years ago, but the evil order continued in secrecy." In "Episode III" the Sith exact their revenge, making "Revenge of the Sith" one of the most literal movie titles you'll ever see.

Speaking of literal titles, the "Sith" announcement means that by Fall 2005 (an approximate date for the "Sith" DVD release), DVD collections across the globe will contain the following movies:

  • Episode I: The Phantom Menace
  • Episode II: Attack of the Clones
  • Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
  • Episode IV: A New Hope
  • Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
  • Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
"Revenge of the Sith" will be released in theaters on May 19, 2004. For more "Star Wars" news check out our spotlight page. -- Mac Slocum
