Variety says Carrell will step in as inept secret agent Maxwell Smart, a role originally handled by Don Adams in the 1965-1970 TV series.
Carrell first garnered attention as a "Daily Show" reporter (his deadpan "political" commentary was always a highlight), but over the last year he's made the jump to bigger roles. In addition to his film work, Carrell has also signed on to star in NBC's Americanized version of the Brit comedy "The Office." Given the crash-and-burn history of retooled British sitcoms ("Coupling" anyone?), Carrell better hope "Get Smart" turns into a franchise.
Production details for "Get Smart" have not been announced. We'll be keeping an eye on this project on our spotlight page. -- Mac Slocum
