FLASH! AHHH-AHHH: Mummy Helmer Nabs Flash Gordon

Variety says Flash Gordon is now in the hands of director Stephen Sommers ("The Mummy" movies, "Van Helsing").

Sommers and his producing partner Bob Ducsay have acquired the rights to the comic character with designs on bringing Flash back to the big screen (he was last seen in 1980). Variety says Sommers will produce and may write the screenplay. There's no word on whether or not he'll direct, but let's face it, that's bound to happen because the over-the-top nature of Flash Gordon is the kind of thing that makes Sommers giddy with directorial glee.
