Memoirs of a Geisha Finds Its Cast

Columbia Pictures has officially announced the cast of its long-gestating adaptation of Arthur Golden's novel "Memoirs of a Geisha."

The final lineup now includes: Ken Watanabe ("The Last Samurai") as The Chairman; Zhang Ziyi ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon") as Sayuri; Michelle Yeoh ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon") as Mameha; Gong Li ("Raise the Red Lantern") as Hatsumomo; Koji Yakusho ("Shall We Dance?") as Nobu; and Youki Kudoh ("Snow Falling on Cedars") as Pumpkin.

Back in 2001 there was speculation that Steven Spielberg would direct "Geisha," but he has since stepped into a producing role. "Adaptation" helmer Spike Jonze was mentioned in 2002 (how weird would that have been?), but the gig finally fell to "Chicago" director Rob Marshall in 2003. And there it has remained.

Production is scheduled to begin in September with an eye toward a late 2005 release. -- Mac Slocum
