Basic Instinct 2 Ramps Up ... Again

Variety says the sequel everyone has waited for -- the one that eclipses the combined anticipation for the "Star Wars" prequels and the "Matrix" sequels -- is finally coming to fruition. That's right. "Basic Instinct 2" may soon bloom to life.

The long-percolating project recently secured funding for a budget estimated to be in the $70 million range (that's a lot of ice picks).

As for casting, original "Instinct" star Sharon Stone is on board and Michael Caton Jones ("City by the Sea") will direct. Variety says a male lead has not yet been hired. Robert Downey Jr., Benjamin Bratt, Pierce Brosnan, Bruce Greenwood and others have circled the lead at various points, but all have moved on to more fulfilling projects (like breathing).

The film's start date has not been set, so we all must clutch our "Basic Instinct" DVDs close to our chests while we wait with baited breath. -- Mac Slocum
